YRock!
Company overview
YRock are a young company which aim to provide individuals with a network, resources and access to the wider music industry from an early age. They provide information on gigs, promotions and projects enabling young people to engage in many different creative disciplines and they hope to encourage a generation of enterprising and innovative individuals.
Their main company objectives are to provide:
- continuous development for young musicians
- a focus on learning that enhances life skills for young people using music as a catalyst
- a unique gig network offering events to both musicians and fans across the country
Feasibility Study
Currently YRock are looking to expand their online presence by integrating with various Social Media Channels and creating an online platform to enhance their events management system. As part of this larger project, the feasibility study outlined the business processes operating within the company and explored the possibility of integrating these processes with various Social Media Channels.
The main deliverables of the feasibility study were:
- a report outlining the requirements of the system
- a report containing a high level design of the system
- a prototype web application
In particular, the prototype was to provide functionality that allowed YRock staff to manage and track events, venues and bands. On the Social Network side of things (specifically MySpace and Facebook), the prototype was to enable users to signup and login to the YRock site using their social network credentials, allow users to pull profile information from the social networks and also allow the publishing of events directly from the YRock site to social network pages.
The outcome
Various issues were encountered whilst integrating the YRock web site with existing social networks. The interfaces that are supplied to allow external sites to connect with them are still in development phase and do not provide all the functionality that was required by YRock. Furthermore, some of the functionality that should have been available did not work as expected.
However, despite these issues, the prototype developed includes the following functionality:
- allows YRock staff to manage events, venues and bands
- allows users to sign up/login to the YRock site using their own choice of social network credentials
- allows bands using the site to pull down their profile information from Facebook to the YRock site
Overall, the feasibility study resulted in a prototype application built on top of YRock's existing web site, a requirements specification and high level design of the proposed system as a whole. The high level system design was developed from a requirements gathering exercise undertaken between the Centre and Yrock. Going forward this will provide the basis for the development of the proposed system as a whole.
